Privacy / identity verification
Evaluate identity-verification requests and personal-data disclosures
Read the request, the responsible entity and the applicable privacy notice before submitting sensitive information.
You will learn
- Distinguish an exchange identity check from a blockchain identity claim.
- Locate the controller, purposes, data categories, sharing, retention and rights in official material for the service actually used.
- Resolve a fictional suspicious request without uploading a document.
Before you begin
No identity document, account data or rights request is submitted.
An exchange check is not a blockchain property
An exchange may ask a customer to verify identity under its service requirements. That process concerns the account relationship and the operator’s checks; it does not turn a public wallet address into a legal identity label or prove who controls an onchain key. The exact provider and requirements depend on the account, service and residence.
Evidence: Binance identity-verification variables (residence/document region; legacy UI) · Binance privacy FAQ on service- and residence-dependent controller
The page says residence, issuing country/region and document type affect the process. Its menu names and screen steps are dated and not reproduced as current UI instructions. Requirements vary by service, region and time.
The FAQ says the controller depends on service and residence and discusses a 5 January 2026 update for certain named entities. It is not a complete universal operator list; confirm the entity in applicable service terms and privacy notice.
Verify who asks and why before sharing data
Start from the service’s verified app or type its known official domain yourself; do not follow an unsolicited message link to an upload form. Confirm that the logged-in account initiated the request, that the requested document and fields match the official flow, and that the stated purpose is understandable. Never send a password, one-time code, recovery phrase or private key to a person or website claiming to “complete KYC.” If the request is unexpected, stop and contact support from the verified service interface.

Read the notice for the operator and product actually used
Locate the current notice linked from the exact service. Check who acts as controller, what categories of personal data are collected, why they are processed, who may receive them, international transfers, retention, security explanations, and which access/correction/deletion or objection rights and contacts apply. Binance.com’s notice checked here shows a last-updated date of 17 July 2026 and its privacy portal describes Binance.com material; Binance.US’s policy dated 22 July 2026 identifies a different operator and scope. A Binance.com FAQ says the controller depends on service and residence. Do not apply one notice to another service or assume that every right is available everywhere.

Solved fictional check: an unexpected upload link
Fictional message: “Your Binance account will be closed; upload ID at verify-binance-example.invalid.” The domain is not established as the account’s official service, the request was not confirmed in the authenticated account, and the message gives no verifiable explanation. Solved result: do not open the link or upload a document. Navigate independently to the known service and check its account notices; if no request appears, contact its official support. This does not prove whether the account has pending verification. No actual site or account was checked.

Keep a minimal record and know the limits
For a genuine request you initiated, record the service domain, named entity, notice title/version and access date, requested data category, stated purpose and official contact path. Keep copies only as permitted by the service and applicable law; protect any identity document and do not place it in a public research note. A privacy notice describes policy, not a guarantee that a particular request will succeed or that no data will be shared. For a specific legal right or dispute, consult the relevant authority or a qualified adviser in your jurisdiction.

Check your understanding
A message threatens account closure and asks for ID at an unfamiliar domain. What has been established, and what is the safe next check?
Show explanation
Nothing establishes that the request is genuine. Do not upload the document or follow the message link. Navigate independently to the known official service, look for a request in the authenticated account, and contact support through that service if necessary.
