Money, bank deposits and cryptoassets: a map of balances
Separate the functions of money, a bank’s deposit liability, an exchange account entry and an onchain asset record.
You will learn
- Explain the three common functions of money without treating them as a universal legal definition.
- Distinguish a bank deposit, an exchange ledger balance and onchain network state.
- Classify a fictional three-system balance map and identify what remains unknown before comparing values.

What money does, and what the label does not settle
Money commonly serves as a medium of exchange, a unit of account and a store of value. These are useful functions for analysis, not a universal legal test that makes every useful asset “money.” An asset can be volatile or difficult to spend even if a person uses it to compare prices or hold value.
Ask two different questions: what role does an item play, and what claim or control does its record represent? A BNB ticker, a bank balance and an exchange screen do not by themselves answer who owes what, who can authorize a transfer, or which network record is involved.

A bank deposit is a claim recorded by a bank
In the United Kingdom, the Bank of England explains that commercial-bank money is recorded as deposits and that banks create deposits when they lend. A deposit is not a bag of notes held aside for each customer. This is a UK institutional explanation, not a complete statement of every country’s law, deposit protection or account contract.
A bank statement can show the bank’s record of its obligation to the customer. The exact account holder, currency, withdrawal rights and protections depend on the bank, product and jurisdiction. Do not equate an entry in a bank app with a token contract or an exchange balance.

Three systems can display “a balance”
A bank ledger records an account relationship with a bank. A centralized exchange ledger records what its operator attributes to an account under that service’s terms. A public blockchain records network state associated with an address or contract; a wallet interface helps inspect or authorize activity under a key or account model.
The operator’s record and a chain record are not interchangeable. A Binance-branded exchange account is a service relationship. BNB is a cryptoasset; BNB Smart Chain and opBNB are separate networks with different state. A BNB balance shown in Binance Spot is not automatically a BNB balance at a self-custody address.

Used only for BNB Smart Chain identity and EVM compatibility. The same page includes time-bound performance, fee and adoption figures; they are not treated as current facts or a current support/availability list.
Used for the documented mainnet network identifiers and the distinction between BSC and opBNB. A configuration page does not establish that a particular exchange supports a route or that an asset is available in an account.
Used only for the documented role of native BNB as BSC gas. The same page contains dated validator details; those counts and performance claims are not reused as current facts.
Solved fictional map: classify first, do not add yet
Fictional worksheet, not a real statement: (1) a UK bank app shows 500 USD-equivalent in a deposit account; (2) a Binance.com Spot screen shows 0.10 BNB; (3) a BSC explorer record shows 0.20 native BNB at a self-custody address. The first is a bank account claim in the named product, the second an exchange account ledger entry, and the third a network balance associated with the address.
The three numbers are not one directly comparable total: currencies and units differ, the service and network controls differ, and no current price, ownership, liability or access path was established. A proper personal balance sheet would need dated valuation and the relevant account, custody and legal context. No real accounts, prices or addresses were checked.

A safe paper check before interpreting a balance
Write down the exact record source, unit, timestamp, account or public address, named operator or network, and who can change the record. Then ask whether it is a claim against an institution, an entry maintained by a service, or public network state. For Binance products, consult the terms and help for the exact service and residence; a Binance.com page does not establish Binance.US or another entity’s rules.
Comprehension check: if a screen says “0.10 BNB,” what else is needed? Solution: identify the screen and record system, exact asset and network, timestamp, relevant operator/account or address, and any restrictions. The ticker alone proves none of those.

Check your understanding
A fictional screen shows 0.20 BNB. Does that alone show a bank deposit, an exchange claim or a transferable balance on a particular chain?
Show explanation
No. Identify the record system, exact service or network, account/address, timestamp and applicable restrictions. The ticker and quantity alone do not establish the record type, custody or current value.
