Opportunity cost: what a choice gives up

Identify the next-best alternative when time or money is limited, separate it from explicit fees, and solve a neutral fictional example.

You will learn

  • Define opportunity cost as the value of the next-best forgone alternative.
  • Separate an explicit fee from the alternative use of a scarce resource.

Before you begin

No exchange account, wallet, transaction or funds are needed; all numbers and scenarios are fictional.

One scarce resource cannot serve every option

Opportunity cost is the value of the next-best alternative forgone when making a choice. It is not the sum of every option you did not take. The St. Louis Fed's educational explanation frames the idea around trade-offs and the next-best alternative. Values can be monetary, time-based or nonmonetary, and some cannot be compared on one scale.

A one-hour fictional choice

Suppose a learner has one free hour. Option A is a short course; Option B is a fictional shift paying 20 MU per hour before tax. If the learner chooses the course, the measurable foregone alternative is 20 MU of gross pay. That does not prove the course is worth more or less: its learning value is not measured in this example. The two-hour alternatives cannot be done in the same hour.

An explicit fee and an opportunity cost are different

A transaction fee is an explicit amount paid under a service or protocol rule. The opportunity cost of using those funds is the value of the best alternative use you give up. They answer different questions and should not be added unless the comparison is carefully defined. Spending 5 MU on network gas, for example, reduces the available balance by 5 MU; the alternative use of those 5 MU is a separate concept.

A small process for comparing options

Name the limited resource and time period. List only feasible alternatives. Identify the next-best option for the same resource. Record what can be quantified and what remains personal or uncertain. Then compare the consequences and constraints; do not disguise uncertainty as a guaranteed return.

Exercise and worked solution

A fictional person has three hours. They can attend a study session, or accept a fictional shift paying 18 MU per hour before tax. They choose the study session. Identify one measurable opportunity cost and one thing the number does not tell you.

Check your understanding

A person chooses three hours of study instead of a fictional 18 MU-per-hour shift. What is the measurable next-best alternative, and what remains unknown?

Show explanation

The next-best alternative is 3 × 18 = 54 MU gross pay before tax. The example does not measure the study's value, future income, personal preference or other constraints.
