BNB Chain history: from Binance Chain to BSC, opBNB and Greenfield
A sourced chronology of the networks, names and migrations that shaped the BNB ecosystem, including legacy Binance Chain and BNB Beacon Chain terminology.
BNB Chain developed through several distinct systems rather than a single uninterrupted network. Binance Chain introduced an early asset-focused chain; Binance Smart Chain added EVM-compatible smart contracts; the broader BNB Chain name later grouped BSC with newer infrastructure such as opBNB and BNB Greenfield. Legacy names remain visible in wallets, explorers and older documentation, so dates and network context matter.
Why does the history matter?
Older instructions may refer to Binance Chain, BEP-2, Binance Smart Chain or BNB Beacon Chain. Those terms can describe different networks and token standards. A user following an outdated transfer guide can choose the wrong network even when the asset symbol looks familiar.
The early asset chain and BEP-2
Binance Chain was designed primarily for issuing and exchanging assets. Its token standard, BEP-2, is not the same as BEP-20 on BNB Smart Chain. Historical references should identify the network and date instead of treating every BNB address as interchangeable.
The launch of Binance Smart Chain
Binance Smart Chain introduced an EVM-compatible execution environment for smart contracts and decentralized applications. It ran alongside the earlier chain and used BNB for gas. The network is now generally called BNB Smart Chain or BSC.
The BNB Chain umbrella
The BNB Chain name became the umbrella for multiple technologies. BSC remained the main EVM execution network, while opBNB added a Layer 2 environment and Greenfield added a blockchain-based storage system. These components have different security assumptions and operational parameters.
How to use historical information safely
Check whether a guide describes BSC, opBNB, Greenfield or a retired legacy chain. Confirm the Chain ID, address format, explorer and token contract using current primary documentation before moving funds.
